Mariah Carey
Back To Home Page

Mariah Carey's career is truly the stuff of legend. Since she began her career, Mariah has since become the best-selling female performer of all time, with an incredible 16 #1 singles and two Grammy Awards. Along the way she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and, with "Heartbreaker," she pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart.

Possessing a spectacular seven-octave range, Mariah has proven that she is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop, often incorporating elements of dance and hip-hop into the mix. Perhaps even more impressive, she composes all of her own material.

In May 2002, Mariah signed an exclusive recording contract with the Universal Music Group's Island Records. In addition, Carey has formed her own label, MonarC Music. The first release for MonarC Music was Mariah's 2003 release "Charmbracelet".

Born in Long Island, NY, as the daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach -- and named after the song "They Call the Wind Mariah" from the popular Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon. Mariah began singing at the age of four, and was writing her own songs by the time she was attending Oldfield Middle School. She moved to New York City, the day after graduating from high school. Honing her songwriting skills and lending her vocals to several local acts, she first garnered industry attention when singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, who gave Mariah's demo tape to Sony Music Entertainment chief Tommy Mottola at a party. As legend has it, Mottola played the demo on his ride home and ordered his driver to immediately return to the party so that he could meet the young singer. Soon afterwards, Mottola signed Mariah to a Columbia Records contract.

Mariah's self-titled Columbia debut, released in 1990, spawned an extraordinary four #1 singles: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry," and led to Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. The following year's album, Emotions, was another smash, with the title track scoring her fifth consecutive #1 single and two other titles, "Can't Let Go" and "Make It Happen",reaching the Top Five. Her next release, 1992?s MTV Unplugged EP, scored another #1 with her cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."
Music Box (1993) became her biggest seller to date, with "Dreamlover" and "Hero" again topping the charts, and was followed by 1994's Merry Christmas, which contained another hit with "All I Want for Christmas is You." Daydream (1995) contained the club-friendly "Fantasy," which debuted at #1, making Mariah the second artist in history, and the first female performer, to accomplish that feat. The follow-up single, "One Sweet Day" (recorded with Boyz II Men), followed suit and stayed at the top of the charts for a record 16 weeks.
Butterfly (1997) revealed an even greater hip-hop flavor than its predecessor, scoring hits with "Honey" and "My All." The following year witnessed the release of greatest hits collection #1's, which included a new song, "When You Believe" (from the film The Prince of Egypt), a duet with Whitney Houston which paired the two most successful female recording artists in pop history. Rainbow, with its chart-topping tune "Heartbreaker," followed in 1999.
In 2001, Mariah signed with Virgin Records, which released Glitter, the soundtrack album to the film of the same name, with Mariah in her first lead acting role. She has also been featured in the films The Bachelor (1999) and Wisegirls (2002).
Mariah has garnered many accolades throughout her career including 2 Grammy Awards, 8 American Music Awards, Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" Award and the World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" to name a few. Mariah's many accomplishments and unprecedented career success stand as a testament to her creativity and talent.
Later in 2003, she released "Charmbracelet" with the minor hit, "Through The Rain" about her surviving her breakdown the past year. In 2005, Mariah returned full swing with "The Emancipation Of Mimi" and gardner up her 16th number one, "We Belong Together".

!!Quick Look!!
Did you know?
Mariah is the only female artist who had 7 albums triple platinum in the US. She is the only artist with three debutes on #1 and she was the first artist who's first 5 US singles reached #1.

Mariah has made it to the Guinness Book of Records for the musician with the highest paid record contract (with Virgin) and as the female artist with the most #1 singles (17) and most #1 weeks (60) on the Billboard charts

*Mariah has a beautician's license? She also used to work in a beauty salon, hence her beauty salon in her NYC Penthouse (as seen on MTV Cribs)*

*Mariah had the idea to tie up the clown in the Fantasy Remix video*

*Mariah and pop singer Justin Timberlake had recorded the song "Yours" for 2003's Charmbracelet as a duet, but the record company didn't want it to be released so it just became a Mariah song*

*There is an original version of the "Vision Of Love" music video but it was trashed because they said Mariah looked too sexy in it, and to this day no one has seen it*

*There are also two versions of "I Don't Wanna Cry", on Mariah's first video "The First Vision" it shows Mariah in a recording studio with a yellowish background but the official video, has Mariah in a field and inside a house with a guy*

*Mariah steams her face after wearing makeup and her throat so that she can hit those high notes!*

*Glitter-The Movie was a basis on the Prince classic "Purple Rain"*

*Mariah gets her name from the musical, "Paint Your Wagon" which featured the song, "They Call The Wind Mariah"*

*In the "We Belong Together" video, the wedding dress that Mariah is wearing was the same dress that Mariah wore when she was married to her record producer Tommy Mottalla*

*The last name of Mariah's father's family is really Nunez, it was changed when Mariah's grandfather came to America and to avoid discrimination changed it to Carey, Mariah found this around the time she released Rainbow, hence that Rainbow and Glitter do not feature Mariah's last name on the cover*

*On "Charmbracelet" there is a song deticated to her deceased father called, "Sunflowers For Alfred Roy", why sunflowers? Mariah said that since her father was allergic, due to the cancer, the only flower he could handle was the sunflower and that Mariah's parents used to grow sunflowers before Mariah was born*

*Mariah has said that she based the "Bringing On The Heartbreak" video on the Bette Midler movie, "The Rose"-Another "BOTH" note, the original was done by 80's hair band, Def Leppard (one of my fave 80's hair bands!) back in 1981 and Def Leppard claimed in the liner notes to their greates hits album that "it was about time someone redid the song" and that "no one but Mariah could pull it off"*

QUOTES
Mariah has said some pretty amazing things, take a look at what she's put her two cents in!

"I appreciate ya, I enjoy ya, and I love ya!"

"Life might as well be a party; otherwise 'Why live it?'"

"There are heartbreakers all over the land, honey, and they must be stopped."

"There's never been anything else in my life that has inspired me at all. It's crazy, but I've always loved music and I've always known this was what I wanted to do. I can't remeber a time when I didn't want to be a singer."

"It's not a realistic goal, it's not a realistic thing, and with that attidude, it's not realistic."

"Singing makes me incredibly happy. Music makes me IMMEASURABLY happy."

"Forget the image, forget the ensemble, forget the rumours forget the short skirts, the big hair, whatever!"

"Stop all the hatred! It would be nice to just just kind of enhance each other rather than bringing each other down."

"Whatever I do, it's never private!"

"A lot of people are singing about how screwed up the world is and I don't think that everybody wants to hear about that all the time."

"My new motto is 'None of this matters. Just have a good time."

"I was the arm-wrestling queen of my school!"

"Acting has helped me grow as a writer and a singer."

"...my real fans understand. I feel like they are an extended family to me, in a strange way. Becuase they accepted me as a person, even though they don't know me personally."

"Technical things freak me out!"

"The fanbooks really keep me going, they really make me happy. Whenever I'm in a bad mood or whatever's going on, I'm like "Where's my fanbooks?!"

"Apparently not only do I not do stairs but I won't walk on carpet and I refuse to walk on grass. What do I do to get around? Hover?"

"I was the kid who was like, 'Um, how exactly is this going to help us in life?'. I knew I was going to have [an accountant]. I just didn't know they were going to rob me!" - Mariah on her school days.

"A lot of people say things that they wouldn't say if they thought that somebody, you know, black was in the room. Or vice versa. Or somebody Latin. I'm a mixture of a lot of things. Because of that, I didn't really feel like I had one person that I identified with."

"When I do a show and sing album cuts and they're [the fans] singing every lyric, every note back to me. That's really impressive and it makes me feel really good as a songwriter. It's like "Okay, they listened to that part that I agonized over. It was worth something."

"I'm not vain. I'm insecure."

"I grew up feeling very weird, very different - because of being multiracial and not looking like most of my friends. I was always feeling like I was an outsider. So I guess it just stuck with me. It's one of those little inferiority complexes that stick with you."

"I'm not one of those inherently skinny people, but I'm naturally pretty muscular. If I ate a lot every night, I'd get fat like anybody else. But if I don't love something, I won't eat it!"

"The most important thing in my focus always has and alway's will be my fans."

"When will the world learn to appreciate the beauty of lambs?"

"Eat, drink, dance, whatever!"

"I don't know and neither do you!"

"Oh please! I am not a diva! It's not like I rolled into Monaco, flung out my arms and said 'Bring me all the seamstresses in the land!"

"It is a complete and total mess, in fact"

"Let's push love to the limit and life to the edge..."

"Why grow up?"

"I have connections..."

"The stuff I do is my own style and my own thing!"
Dictionary
(I) APPRECIATE YA, ENJOY YA, AND I LOVE YA:
Mariah's way of saying "Thanks"

BAG:
An Austin Powers characteristic that Mariah uses. She often says "it's not my bag" to state "it's not my thing"

BANGING:
A word for "cool" or another word for "stellar".

BE A LAMB:
Same as "could ya help me out" see "lamb"

BE GOOD:
Two words Mariah ends conversations with.

BING BONG!:
Used to quickly end an argument or conversation while still able to be funny

BOO:
Mariah's phrase for people fond of her.

CHOPS:
A derivative of 'lamb' - e.g. 'Hi Chops!'- the male variation on the same theme. This does not mean you can not call a girl 'chops', or a boy 'lamb', they're unisex.

COLLABO:
A slight abbreviation for "collaboration", word usage originated in 1999

COMBO-PLATE:
Mariah uses this term to describe her Rainbow album, which mixes different musical styles, influences, techniques, etc.

COMPLETE AND TOTAL JOKE:
A variation of "Complete joke" and "Complete mess."

COMPLETE AND TOTAL MESS:
A classic phrase at this point - refers to anything getting on one's nerves or just said as a casual throwaway when the explanation is too long.

COMPLETE NONSENSE:
Said in the same accent as 'Complete joke' or 'Complete mess' with emphasis on the consonants and a slight whistle effect on the end 'se'.

DRAMA:
Basically, meaning a whole bunch of "nonsense" and a big "mess."

DRAMATICKING:
The verb describing the action of drama

(I) DON'T KNOW, AND NEITHER DO YOU:
A coy phrase used when Mariah wants to be secretive about a particular subject.

EAT, DRINK, DANCE, WHATEVER:
Mariah's way of stating that people are free to do what they like.

ENSEMBLE:
Same as "outfit" (e.g. "Do you like the ensemble?")
FREAKIN':
Mariah uses this all the time in place of a swear word such as you-know-what.

HOLLA:
Mariah's way of saying "hi!" or telling her fans that she will be sending another message soon i.e. "I'll holla back soon."

HONEY B. FLY:
Mariah's secret nickname that became not so secret. Used in the Honey So So Def remix by Da Brat.

IF THAT'S GONNA MAKE YOU HAPPY:
Basically said in a sarcastic manner - i.e. who am I? It's all about you! e.g. When someone is clearly only interested in their own point of view. For instance, "Please, try the halibut, I insist." You could respond with, "Hey...might as well - if that's gonna make you happy." (even if you hate halibut!) And then proceed to order something else!

IN FACT:
MC uses this phrase at the end of statements to say "just so you know."

LAMB:
A term of endearment - e.g. 'You're my lamb' or 'Hey, lamb!' - when addressing a loved one or close friend. My use of this term originated from a story told to me by the "Grammy nominated Trey Lorenz" dating back a few years which would not be politically correct to repeat!

LAMBY:
Same as above but used when one is a little more familiar with you.

HEY, MIGHT AS WELL...IF YOU GOT A LITTLE EXTRA:
Said in the same accent as "yeah...and hey" with a tad more zest - e.g. A waiter approaches with the question, 'Would you care for something to drink?' Your response could be, "Hey - if they got a little extra in the back and ain't nobody else drinkin' it... might as well...fill me up a glass" - or something of that nature.

MESS:
Used often as "that whole mess," which refers to a weird/ difficult situation. Note "mess" is pronounced with an "sh" at the end.

MUTT:
A word Mariah calls herself meaning multiracial a cute way to say it. Note: originated on an appearance on Rosie when she brought her dog, Guam

O:
Means "of".

OKIE DOKIE SMOKEY:
Used in place of "okay, what's next?" Mariah said this during the Chicago Rainbow concert in 2000

OKAAAAAAY:
Used with sarcasm when Mariah is unsure of the situation in other words "you do what you want, but whatever."

OH DEAR:
Used when at a loss for words. It's basically a safe haven - you may choose to add a quick vibrato on the end of 'dear' depending on how deep the situation is.

OH MY:
Another form of "Oh Dear."
PAPOW!:
Used while making effects with hands, in order to enphasize a point. Note: seen in the All Access Family Channel special.

PIP!:
A phrase used to describe something really cool for example "Those jeans are very Pip!"

POW!:
Used when you make something happen i.e. " I just signed the contract the deal is done, POW!"

" " (Quotations made with hands):
Just a funny thing to do to emphasize certain words or phrases.

SING SING:
Code name for Mariah's old mansion double pun because Sing Sing is a New York State prison, and she was always asked to "Sing! Sing!"

SPIRAL (Spiraling):
Originally used in Crybaby, this word describes a situation or idea that one is lost in or is not clear
STELLAR:
A word in place of "great" or "good" Rolling Stones magazine wrote "she pronounces [it], as she does certain words and phrases, a la Dr. Evil [from the movie Austin Powers]."

THINGS OF THAT NATURE:
A common phrase Mariah uses often meaning "things like that."

WHAT UP, PLAYA:
This is the way Mariah and her friend/ backup singer Trey Lorenz sometimes say hi to each other.

WHY?:
Said in a rhetorical sense as if asking "Why me? What did I do to deserve this?" Meant to be comical.

YA KNOW:
Mariah likes to imitate Jay-Z with this phrase (used at the Toronto Rainbow Concert)

YEEAAH:
Mariah often starts her online voice messages with this greeting
YEAH, AND HEY...:
Said together as a verbal pause in the following ways: 1. Sometimes while resigning due to the realization that you can't change something or someone - i.e. whatever - not said angrily, though. 2. A random transition (said slowly) - i.e. 'yeah...and hey---'. Here 'yeah' is a tone or two higher than 'hey'. It is necessary to pause between the 'yeah' and the 'and'. 3. When a hush falls upon a crowd of two or more people, it is also appropriate to say. We all know why!

YOU LOVE ME:
All-purpose, anytime phrase. A greeting, a goodbye, or just something to throw into a pause in the conversation or to interject loudly while someone is speaking.
